Michael Sam made his NFL debut Friday night

Michael Sam made history with about five minutes to play in the first quarter of the preseason game between the St. Louis Rams and New Orleans Saints.

Sam became the first openly gay player to appear in an NFL game. His first tackle came in the second quarter.

A seventh round pick out of Missouri, Sam isn't guaranteed a spot on the Rams regular season roster and will need to prove himself over the course of St. Louis' preseason.

For now, Sam can take pride in this historic moment and hope to make a few more by the end of the 2014 NFL season.
